" We arrive at this crossroads over and over again, and every day,
WE GET TO CHOOSE."
- From "The Crossroads of SHOULD and MUST: Find and Follow Your Passion"

The National Bookstore is a good
store for good books, aside from the fact that it is the only accessible bookstore
to me. One trip there, I was planning to buy a book by a Filipino writer under
a two hundred budget. I rummaged through bookshelves after bookshelves of good
candidates for my chosen criterion. Then, I decided to crutch down another
bookshelf behind me and look through the rows of books there and saw this one. “Don’t
judge the book by its cover.” But, I did.
The aesthetic of the book is
superb from the outside through every page. I love how visual and creative it
is, in addition to its insightful contents. Overall, this book is empowering,
encouraging and inspiring.
Luckily, there was this one copy
which plastic cover has already been removed, lo and behold an open book ready
for my inspection. Good thing it happened, because upon reading some pages,
line after line, I was struck and taken aback by its truth. Regardless of my
initial budget for a book, I bought this one for Php 699.00, a bit pricey, but
for me, it’s worth it!
“The Crossroads of SHOULD and
MUST: Find and Follow Your Passion” is by Elle Luna, a highly creative person
who make a living with her artistic works. She’s also a speaker who shares her
ideas about “Shoulds” and “Musts” to various people.
Let me share with you some of the
empowering thoughts
Elle Luna has in this book
1. “’If
you see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you know it’s not your
path,’ Joseph Campbell said. ‘Your own path you make with every step you take.
That’s why it’s your path.’”
2. “If
you believe that you have something special inside of you, and you feel it’s
about time you give it a shot, honor that calling in some small way – today. If
you feel a knot in your stomach because you can see the enormous distance
between your dreams and your daily reality, do one thing to tighten your grip
on what you want – today. If you’ve been peering down the road to must but can’t
quite make the choice, dig a little deeper and find out what’s stopping you –
today. Because there is a recurring choice in life, and it occurs at the
intersection of two roads. We arrive at this place again and again.”
3. “If
you want to live the fullness of your life – if you want to be free – you must
understand, first, why you are not free, what keeps you from being free.”
4. “You
make time for what you want. If you’re not prioritizing the things you say you
care about, consider the possibility that you don’t actually care about those
things.”
5. “Don’t
ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you alive, and go do it. Because what
the world needs is people who have come alive.” – Howards Thurman, Philosopher
