How To Be Truly Happy?

Happiness is a subjective matter to talk about. One's source of happiness is different from the other. However, there are things that are universally acceptable when trying to obtain TRUE happiness.

I was twenty years old when I was taught by a professor uncle about simple things on praying and becoming HAPPY. I think his ideas where simple, yet we almost always forget about them. Let me share what he taught me...

According to him there are four criteria we have to fulfill to be happy. These criteria includes the necessity to:
  1. Be lovely
  2. Be healthy
  3. Be wealthy
  4. Be holy
How to become lovely...
Being lovely entails not just to look good but to feel good as well. Smile more often, even the consequences don't let you. Just smile, because that smile when done regularly can really make other people feel good as well. Doesn't it feel good whenever you make other people happy? Be happy by choosing to look at the brighter side of life.

TIPS TO BE GOOD-LOOKING:

  • For lovely eyes -  "...always look at the good side of other people. (Phil 2:4)"
  • For tender lips -  "...speak only kind words towards others. (Col 4:6)"
  • For a charming face - "...always smile with a happy heart. (Prov. 15:13)"
  • For graceful arms - "...reach out with compassion to those in need. (Rom 9:15)"
  • For beautiful feet - "Always walk with God! (Gen 6:9)"
How to be healthy and wealthy...
He set this list of things we have to engage in to become healthy and wealthy- the NEW START!

N - utrition
E - xercise
W - ater

S - ave
- emperance
A - ctivity
R -  est
T - ime schedule

Nutrition.  It includes good and healthy food to eat. Say NO to junk foods and YES to greens!

Exercise. It does not only burns fat and make us physically look good, but it also enables the release of Endorphins, the happy hormones.

Water. Six to eight glasses of water cleanses our system from toxic substances from the food and bad air we intake and inhale.

Saving. In saving, we also allow ourselves to be wealthy. We save money, we gain more in the future. But saving does not only include the financial part of our being. We also have to save ourselves from any wrong doings, so we free ourselves from the consequences of those wrong doings.

My uncle also told me this fact about life: always keep extra cash with you no matter what! He showed me his wallet, bag and jean's side pockets. They are full of cash! He told me, he did not brought them with him to boast or to buy things. He brought them with him so when his family or friends ask him to join them to go somewhere, like the mall, he won't hesitate to be with them and enjoy some time with them. He did not use those money to spend, but it was that feeling that he did not have to feel bad not being able to buy something he really wanted just because he did not have money, but it was because he just did not want to buy anything because he chose to be thrifty and to save for something better. Bringing so much entails a lot of self control, and he had mastered it quite well through  years of practice.

He told me to allot money to savings or investments to businesses or other prosperous matters. Do not spend money to things that will only give us temporary happiness or stability. Always think of the long-term effect of whatever we are doing.

Temperance. It is one difficult task to perform, yet, it is very necessary if we want to succeed, especially now-a-days that our environment is full of distractions. Focus more on what is important and less on what is not. Focus on people and not on material things, on the product and not the materials used. We have to do things in moderation and become responsible for our own actions.

Activity. We have to perform, become active and to work to succeed! We have to be productive and consume our life well with so much meaning. Rest as the word tells us to. Resting is different from being unproductive and lazy. Besides why won't we love being active now, if we have loads of time to rest when we are already lying six feet under?

Rest. Though we always yearn to become productive, a good night rest is also a must. However, do not prolong rest, especially in the morning, because it may lead to unproductiveness.

Time schedule.  Make a schedule for everything to become more effective. Remember, there is time for everything. (Ec 3:1-8)

"There is a time for everything,

and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,

a time to kill and a time to heal,

a time to tear down and a time to build,

a time to weep and a time to laugh,

a time to mourn and a time to dance,

a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,

a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,

a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,

a time to tear and a time to mend,

a time to be silent and a time to speak,

a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace."

How to be holy...
Pray and offer all of you for the glory of God! Attend the mass and become active with your faith. Personally, it always makes me feel good whenever I fully serve God through masses and novenas. Those moments that I truly understand the preaches of the priest are really worth every effort of going to church. I feel rejuvenated and inspired!
